the art of nuno felting
Nuno Felting is the process of melding fibers together. This is achieved by laying down thin layers of fibers on top of each other, adding soapy water, and then agitating those fibers.
You know, when you accidentally washed that sweater you loved so much, only to find it had shrunk 3 sizes? That is the process of felting. What happens is each piece of fiber has tiny little barbs on it with agitation, those barbs grab onto each other creating a tighter unit. The more heat and agitation, the more the fibers grab onto each other, and the smaller your piece gets.
In general, my work begins 3 times larger than the finished size.
